Website speed optimization for local businesses
Most local business websites are slow for two or three specific reasons, and none of them require a rebuild to fix.
A slow site costs you the customers who were furthest from deciding: the ones who found you on a phone, on mobile data, with three other tabs open. They don't complain or send an email. They go back to the search results and call whoever loads first. Nothing in your analytics will tell you this happened.
The causes are usually mundane. Images uploaded straight from a camera or a stock library at ten times the size they display at. A page builder requesting ninety font variations to render nine. Stylesheets and scripts that block the page from appearing at all until they have finished downloading. Caching that was never configured, or was configured and then quietly broken by a plugin update.
We fix these by hand, on your site, within whatever your hosting allows. That last part matters: a lot of speed advice assumes you can change hosts or rebuild. You usually can't and usually don't need to.
What's included
Everything covered, in plain terms.
Core Web Vitals
Largest Contentful Paint, Cumulative Layout Shift and Interaction to Next Paint. The three measurements Google uses, diagnosed and addressed individually.
Image delivery
Conversion to modern formats, correct sizing, and making sure phones download phone-sized images rather than desktop ones.
Font loading
Cutting the number of typeface variations requested, combining requests, and stopping fonts blocking the page from painting.
Render-blocking code
Identifying the stylesheets and scripts that delay the first paint, and deferring or removing what doesn't need to load first.
Caching
Page caching, browser caching and whatever your host provides at the edge, all checked, configured and verified as actually working.
Verification
Measured on Google's own infrastructure, on a warm cache, three runs, median taken, and only after confirming your cache has turned over.
Questions
Site Speed, answered.
How much faster will my site get?
It depends entirely on what's wrong with it, and anyone who quotes you a number before looking is guessing. The free scan measures your current load time on a mobile connection and identifies the specific causes, so the estimate you get afterwards is based on your site rather than an average.
Do I need a new website to make it faster?
Almost never. The common causes (oversized images, excessive font loading, render-blocking code, misconfigured caching) are all fixable on the site you already have. A rebuild is sometimes the right answer for other reasons, but speed on its own rarely justifies one, and being told otherwise is worth a second opinion.
Does site speed actually affect my Google ranking?
Yes, but indirectly and less than people claim. Core Web Vitals are a confirmed ranking signal, though a minor one next to relevance. The larger effect is on conversion: people leave slow pages, and a visitor who leaves before the page appears can't call you regardless of where you ranked.
Will it stay fast?
Not automatically. Speed work decays. Someone uploads a large image, a plugin updates, a new page gets built in the page builder without the same care. That's what an SEO retainer is for, though plenty of clients take the fixes and manage it themselves, which is a completely reasonable outcome.
